Case Study 1
I just wanted to point out that when I first read the case study I was stuck between melinda and babera's teaching methods. I like Melinda's approach to creative hands on learning but Barbera's paranoia over the standerdized test kind of made me think. I do feel Barbera went a little over board with some of her request. After discussing the case study in class I could really care less about how Barbera wants Melinda to teach her kids. I am all for Melinda teaching which ever way she feels is best for her kids to learn. After all like we discussed, it is her first year and that is the time where you explore different things and where it is ok for you to make mistakes. Who knows her kids may even do great on the test, no one will ever know unless she is allowed the oppurtunity.

I agree. I enjoyed our discussion in class this day--when we spoke about how it's ok for us to make mistakes during our first year of teaching. I think this is really important to remember. When I first read the case study, I thought Melinda should incorporate some of Barbara's drilling into her lessons. After class though, I completely agreed that Melinda should take her chances and stick to purely her own teaching style. It's true that you're only a new teacher once!
I think Melinda has the potential to be a truly great teacher. She should welcome the guidance from Barbara and keep in mind that there are a lot of difficulties involved in disagreeing professionally with a fellow teacher. Although it will not be easy, her enthusiasm and intellect will aid her in finding clever and innovative ways to teach the students not only the information they need to do well on the standardized tests but also how to be the “creative thinkers” she had hoped to make them. I like how you ended your post. I agree she deserves the opportunity to try her ideas.
i think that she really has to get her feet wet and see what works. she will never know til she sees the results at the end of the year. i think she needs to see those results and then move from there. she should not be pushed around by older teachers. she might want to think of a pratice test though just to see where the kids stand with her style.
